The Drain Commissioner is an elected official and is mandated by the State of Michigan. He is responsible to review drainage problems for needed corrective action by working in conjunction with the Iron County Road Commission involving drainage problems within the townships. These usually involve culvert placements and drainage ditches. He also reviews plot plans for proper placement of drainage in conjunction with land surveyors.
He is also responsible for checking and maintaining the lake levels on three Iron County lakes. He must ensure that they within the range as set by the Iron County Circuit Court. He does this by routinely checking specific areas on Stager, Sunset, and Fortune Lakes. Beavers cause most of the problems with the lake levels.
